The Blizzard of 1949 – January 12-13, 1949
This storm is widely regarded as one of the most destructive blizzards ever to hit Nebraska. Winds were estimated up to 80 mph in some areas, resulting in drifting snow that reached heights of 20 feet or more in places! The storm caused an estimated $50 million worth of damage and killed more than 100 people across several states—including 27 Nebraskans.
The “Storm of the Century” – March 12-14, 1993
This massive storm system battered much of the Midwest and resulted in over 30 inches of snowfall across parts of western Nebraska. Many highways had to be closed due to drifts that reached as high as 8 feet! Despite its intensity, no deaths were reported due to this storm—although there was an estimated $120 million worth of damage done throughout the region.
The Valentine’s Day Storm – February 13-14, 2007
This one was particularly memorable for residents around Valentine and other towns along Nebraska’s northern border with South Dakota. The storm dumped over 2 feet on snow on these communities—causing major disruptions and prompting many schools to close for two days afterward! Fortunately, no deaths were reported from this particular event either.
The Christmas Eve Blizzard – December 24-26, 2009
This one was especially hard-hitting for folks living in eastern Nebraska’s Omaha Metro area. Nearly 4 inches fell on Christmas Eve alone—with another 10 inches falling throughout the next two days! All told, this storm dropped nearly 15 inches on parts of Douglas County—resulting in an estimated $10 million worth of damage throughout the region (although no lives were lost).
Conclusion
Overall, while all snow storms can be dangerous and disruptive, these four have stood out as being some of the worst that Nebraska has ever seen. From extreme winds creating towering drifts to record amounts of accumulation falling within a short period of time—these storms have certainly left their mark on local history!
